Where is my water meter? How do you read my meter?
Water usage is measured by the water meter located inside your home or building.  HAWC meters are read remotely using radio frequency.  Refer to “Meter Information & Leak Detection” for more information .
This month’s bill is higher than normal, why?
If there have been no changes to thewater rates and the bill has increased, this means the water usage has also increased.  Sometimes this is the first indication of a plumbing issue.  You can monitor your usage and check for water leaks utilizing your water meter’s reading and flow indicator. Please refer to “Meter Information & Leak Detection” for more information.
How does the water get to my property?
Water service is provided to your property through HAWC’s water mains and the water service line to your property. For more information please refer to “Who Owns What“.
Purchasing or Renting a property with water provided by HAWC?
All new customers must complete a Water Service Application.  Please refer to  New Service  for additional information.

Who Owns What?

HAWC Responsibility vs. Customer Responsibility

Please refer to the diagram and detailed descriptions below for information on ownership.

HAWC is responsible for the following:

Water Main

HAWC

The water mains are located throughout the roadway and are connected to each water service location. The water mains are owned and maintained by HAWC.
Tap and Service Connection

Tap & Service Connection

HAWC

Tap – The point at which the service connection pipe is connected to the water main.

Service Connection – The portion of pipe that runs from the water main to the water shut-off valve.

Water Shutoff Valve Cover

Water Shutoff Valve & Cover

HAWC

The water shut-off valve allows the water service to be shut off to your home or business. The valve is typically located on or near your property line, and is typically 4’ to 5’ underground. The valve cover is the round metal plate, approximately 3” in diameter, usually at grade-level. The valve cover provides access to the shut-off valve located underground.
RF box

Remote Register

HAWC

(RF Box) – This device allows the water register to be read remotely. The remote register is a 4”x 5” gray colored box located on the outside of the property and is connected by wire to your water meter. Not all properties will have an RF Box. Visit our Leak Detection page to determine the type of water meter and register located at your property.
Meter Register

Water Meter

HAWC

This device is directly connected to the plumbing at the service location; water flows through the meter and is measured by the water meter’s register, attached to the meter. Visit our Leak Detection page to determine the type of water meter and register located at your property.
Water Meter

Meter Register

HAWC

This device tracks the water usage that flows through the water meter. The meter register is attached to the water meter and looks similar to an odometer; approximately 3” round in diameter, typically black colored on the sides. Visit our Leak Detection page to determine the type of water meter and register located at your property.

You, the customer, are responsible for the following:

Water Service Line

Customer

The portion of water pipe leading from the water shut-off valve into the service location.
Shutoff Valve

Inside Shutoff

Customer

Also known as the “inside house valve”. This valve is located inside the service location at the water service line’s point of entry (normally before the meter). This allows the property owner to shut-off the water that enters service location.
Water Shutoff Valve Cover

Pressure Reducing Valve

Customer

(PRV) – This device regulates the pressure of water entering the property. Not all properties require a PRV; if your property has a pressure reducing valve it would be connected to your plumbing; typically located near the water meter or hot water heater. A licensed plumber can determine the pressure for plumbing systems as well as provide information for any additional requirements, such as a PRV, if necessary. It is the responsibility of the customer to ensure the PRV is properly installed, that the required settings are accurate and to maintain the PRV to ensure it remains operating correctly.
Expansion Tank

Expansion Tank

Customer

Water is non-compressible; when water is heated in a closed system it expands creating additional water volume – pressure. If the pressure builds and does not have anywhere to go it can cause damage to the water heater as well as the plumbing system. Expansion tanks allow for the increased water volume, protecting a closed heating system from damage. Not all properties require an Expansion Tank. A licensed plumber can determine requirements for plumbing and heating systems. It is the responsibility of the customer to ensure the expansion tank is properly installed, that the required settings are accurate and to maintain the expansion tank to ensure it remains operating correctly.
Rules & regulations under which service is provided are detailed in the HAWC Tariff on file with the NH Public Utilities Commission. Per HAWC’s Tariff: Customers shall maintain the plumbing and fixtures within their own premises in good repair, free from leaks and protected from freezing, at their own expense; failure to do so may result in water service disconnection. Water meters, Radio Frequency Boxes, and any other HAWC equipment used to supply water to the service address are the property of Hampstead Area Water Co., Inc. (HAWC). The customer of record is responsible to keep the equipment accessible to HAWC for reading, maintenance, and/or inspection at all times. Any damaged equipment will be repaired or replaced at the customer of record’s expense.
