HAWC’s goal is to protect the future of drinking water and we encourage all of our customers to do the same. HAWC is fortunate to have an adequate supply of water for everyday needs, however it is important to use this water wisely. Conserving water helps to avoid the considerable expense of developing new water supply sources, and ensures that we will continue to have adequate supplies to service our customers.

WATERING POLICY

This policy is effective YEARLY for ALL Water Systems. A watering ban may be effective in addition to this policy. Please check our watering ban section for more details.

Water conservation is simply a wise use of a precious resource even when the water supply is plentiful. Conserving water can contribute to a healthy environment, help ensure a sufficient water supply for years to come and reduce your water bill. The watering policy is a key element of HAWC’s Water Conservation Program. The purpose of HAWC’s watering policy is to regulate irrigation systems & lawn sprinklers; encouraging conservation and preventing excessive water use.

Section 34.A of the Hampstead Area Water Company, Inc.’s (HAWC’s) Tariff states “The Company retains the right to establish restrictions on outside water use as required to maintain an adequate supply of potable water for domestic use.” Lawn watering is the largest single contributor to overuse of water. In one hour, one sprinkler can use as much water as the rest of your household uses in one day.

HAWC’s watering policy applies to lawns only and consists of an odd/even watering schedule, as well as a restriction on irrigation system and lawn sprinkler use between the hours of 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. In addition, irrigation system and lawn sprinklers must be adjusted appropriately so as to not overspray into areas that do not require water such as driveways, streets, parking lots, etc. Automatic irrigations systems and lawn sprinklers must be set to comply with both the odd/even schedule and the hours permitted for irrigation and lawn watering. This policy will be strictly enforced.

Odd or Even Days Based on Your Address
If your home or business’s address ends in an even number (0, 2, 4, 6 or 8) you may water only on even-numbered calendar dates. For example, if your address is 1234 Main St., you would water on EVEN calendar days such as the 2nd, 4th, 6th, etc…

Likewise, if your home or business’s address ends in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7 or 9) you may water only on odd-numbered calendar dates. For example, if your address is 2345 Main St., you would water on ODD calendar days such as the 1st, 3rd, 5th, etc…

Check Your Clock
Water Only BEFORE 6 AM & AFTER 6 pm
Watering during the heat of the day requires as much as four times the water to get the same benefits as watering in the early morning or evening hours. Therefore, irrigation and lawn watering is permitted ONLY before 6:00 AM or AFTER 6:00 PM.

Please be advised that the watering policy is ongoing and will be strictly enforced. The first violation of the policy will result in a written notice for failure to comply. Further violations will result in immediate disconnection of your water service as well as disconnection and reconnection fees.
